A Massive Cleanup Operation I Undertook After an Earthquake

posted on 28 November 2011

Pakistan was badly struck by an earthquake in October 2005. Balakot, a major city in Kashmir, was completely destroyed. Everything turned into ruins with thousands of casualties. I, alongwith my organization undertook a massive rescue operation and cleaned up the entire rubble. Heavy machinery was required to remove the rubble and takeout dead bodies. But earthquake also caused land sliding and major portion of the road was slid into river. Thus it was extremely difficult to take off the rubble of buildings. We managed few dozers and cranes. First of all, we decided to clean up a school where 500 girls were burried underneath. Cranes and dozers were operated with utmost care to save those who were still alive, but under the rubble. We got help from machinery and sniffer dogs to know about alive girls. We operated the machines for two days and managed to recover 38 alive girls. Rest were dead with bodies badly mutilated. We burried the dead immediately to avoid any epidemic disease outbreak. Alive were taken to hospital immediately through helicopters for first aid. We also setup some rainwater harvesting systems too to help with water supplies. It was a very difficult task which was performed with precise coordination and support from the entire community who managed to survive in that Quake.

Always Look After Yourself in the Workplace

posted on 24 November 2011

We all need to be careful at the workplace as there are many accidents waiting to happen. However, from safety overalls to training, we can mitigate the dangers through preparation. I recently did some casual work in a nursing home where I had to care for the elderly residents. I was giving a patient a shower and nearly slipped on the wet floor which was wet from the previous shower. The staff member carelessly left the floor wet. Some people are incredibly lazy. When I had to lift the patient back into bed I managed to strain my neck muscles. I was expected to lift the patient myself without any help. The resident was a fairly large person and was very heavy. Other nursing homes which I have previously worked in had lifting machines and next time I will refuse to do any lifting unless I have access to one. My injury has improved and am working in a job which is less active. These unsafe work practices need addressing as permanent injuries can be sustained from such practices.

Adding an Addition to My House

posted on 5 November 2011

As my husband and I spend a lot of time outside, I would like to extend out our front porch, and add a walkway to a new carport. My husband has stihl saws and other tools - he's really into his DIY - so I'm sure we can do this job without outside help. This is something that we have talked about doing. We spend a great amount of time outside, talking, and even entertaining. I think it would be a dream to extend our front porch, and maybe screen it in. We currently have a fan out here, but maybe replace it with a new fan. I would also love to add a porch swing, or even a new table and chairs. Since we have a toddler, I would also like to add a gate at the top of our stairs to prevent accidents from occurring. We currently have a walkway, but I wouldn't mind making it more wide, so two or more people can walk, and adding lighting as well up the pathway. These are just several ideas of what I would like to change about my home.

I Need New Carpets to Warm Up My House

posted on 25 October 2011

I'm OK at small jobs like adding velcro fasteners here or a lick of paint there, but there's a bigger job on the horizon I can't ignore. New flooring, I would very much like to have carpet that does not stain as easily, that holds up better when I vacuum or shampoo and would not shred so much. The tile on my bathroom floor, I would like to see it more vivid not such a dull color and would have more firmness, so that when I step on it does not feel as I am sinking. My hard wood floors, I like to have carpet laid down to keep the cold off my feet at night and also so that I don’t have to mop as often. The kitchen would look nicer if the linoleum would match the counter tops. For my children’s bedrooms, I would very much like the carpets to match the paint on the walls that match the dressers and the bed sets. New flooring, I would love new flooring for my entire home.

The Different Factors That Determine Steel Building Prices

posted on 30 May 2011

Constructing a steel building is no easy feat. It entails a whole lot of work, time and money. And although it isn’t as pricey as other types of structures, constructing a steel building is still an expensive endeavor and spending a considerable amount of money is almost inevitable. So before going into such an investment, it is essential that you are aware of the different factors that may determine the overall costs of constructing your building. An exact amount is difficult to determine, but coming up with a good estimate makes it easier for you to budget both your time and money efficiently. One of the main factors that may determine steel building prices are the structure’s dimensions and over all design. It makes sense that the bigger your structure is, the more it will cost. After all, it will demand more materials. Also, if the design calls for special features, such as insulation, the cost is sure to increase. Another determining factor is how you intend to use to building in the future. Typically, buildings made for private use will cost less. Commercial and industrial buildings tend to demand more in terms of design, so they normally cost a little more.
